Arsenal's interest in Jules Kounde is not new, but it now appears the Gunners went further than admiring from afar.
According to Team Talk, Arsenal held talks with Barcelona over the France international's signature during the summer transfer window. An agreement was pursued, but the deal never materialised and Kounde remained at the Camp Nou.

Why Arsenal keep circling back
On paper, right-back is not an area of obvious weakness. Mikel Arteta has two of the Premier League's more versatile defenders in Ben White and Jurrien Timber, both of whom can operate on the right and invert into midfield when the system demands it.
The issue has been availability. Both players have dealt with fitness problems during their time in north London, and there have been stretches where Arteta has had to take turns rotating around one of them — and occasions where neither was available at all.
That is the context behind Arsenal's continued monitoring of Kounde. The report states the Gunners remain committed to White and Timber, but the recurring fitness concerns have created a need for additional cover in that area of the pitch.
January or summer?
Team Talk suggest Arsenal could explore another move in the January window, although a summer approach is considered the more realistic route. Barcelona's valuation and squad planning would likely make a mid-season sale of a first-choice defender complicated, and the Catalan club have shown little appetite for weakening their backline during a campaign.
Kounde, for his part, is widely regarded as one of the better operators in his position in Europe. Originally a centre-back by trade at Sevilla, he has been converted into a full-back at Barcelona and has become a fixture in that role for both club and country.
His profile would fit what Arteta asks of his right-sided defenders — comfortable in possession, capable of stepping inside, and more than equipped to play as a central defender when required. That versatility is precisely what Arsenal have prized in White and Timber.
What happens next
It is worth noting the reliability caveat here. This is a Team Talk report rather than a Tier 1 scoop from the likes of David Ornstein or Fabrizio Romano, and the framing is one of ongoing monitoring rather than an imminent bid.
What the report does establish is that contact has already been made. Clubs rarely open talks over a player of Kounde's standing without a genuine intention to do business, and a failed summer approach often lays the groundwork for a second attempt down the line.
For now, Arsenal's priority will be keeping White and Timber on the pitch. Should those fitness problems persist into the new year, the club's recruitment team will have a clear precedent to build on when the window reopens.
