Arsenal keeper to leave after eight years following injury recall

Arsenal goalkeeper Naomi Williams will depart the club when her contract expires at the end of this season, bringing to a close an eight-year association with the north London side.

The 21-year-old joined Arsenal’s academy at the age of 13 and has been a regular fixture in matchday squads over the past three seasons, though she never made a competitive appearance for the Gunners.

Williams began this campaign on loan at Bristol City but was recalled in January following Manu Zinsberger’s ACL injury. The Austrian goalkeeper is also set to leave Arsenal this summer, creating further changes in the goalkeeping department.

Loan recall fails to provide breakthrough

Despite her recall to north London, Williams was unable to establish herself as first choice at Bristol City, failing to displace Fran Bentley from the number one position during her time with the Championship side.

The goalkeeper announced her departure via Instagram on Monday, expressing the emotional difficulty of leaving the club that has shaped her development.

“Words cannot express my pride and honour of being, having spent eight years at the club,” Williams wrote. “This was the hardest decision I have made in my life so far, Arsenal forming my identity, habits and actions on a daily basis…Arsenal will forever remain in my heart and I will forever remain a Gooner.”

Club pays tribute to departing keeper

Arsenal responded with their own tribute, acknowledging Williams’ contribution during her time with the women’s team. “Everyone at Arsenal Football Club thanks Naomi for her efforts during her time with us and we wish her well for her next chapter,” the club stated.

The departure represents another example of the challenging pathway young goalkeepers face in breaking into senior football. Despite years of development within Arsenal’s system and inclusion in matchday squads, Williams was unable to secure the competitive minutes needed to cement her place at the club.

Williams’ exit comes amid a period of transition for Arsenal Women’s goalkeeping department, with Zinsberger also departing following her injury struggles. The club will now need to address their goalkeeping options ahead of the new campaign.

The young keeper will now look to find a new club where she can secure regular first-team opportunities and continue her development in senior football.
