Arsenal have emerged as frontrunners in the race to sign Sporting midfielder Morten Hjulmand this summer, with the club reportedly working on a potential deal for the Danish international in recent weeks.

The 25-year-old has been on Arsenal’s radar since his time at Serie A side Lecce, but Sporting moved quickly to secure his services before the Gunners could complete a transfer. Since arriving in Portugal, Hjulmand has established himself as both a leader and impressive midfield talent.

Gunners lead competitive chase

Despite Sporting’s reluctance to lose the midfielder, this summer could present the best opportunity for Hjulmand to secure a move, with interest growing from across Europe.

Arsenal face competition from Manchester United and Juventus for his signature, but the north London side are currently believed to be leading the pursuit as they look to strengthen Mikel Arteta’s squad ahead of next season.

According to Correio da Manhã, the Gunners are presently in pole position to sign the midfielder, and a move to the Emirates could materialise if he decides to leave Sporting during the summer transfer window.

Midfield reinforcement priority

Arsenal view Hjulmand as an ideal addition to their midfield because of his leadership qualities, tactical discipline and technical ability. The club are expected to intensify their interest once there is greater clarity regarding his future at Sporting.

The Danish international’s performances in Portugal have enhanced his reputation significantly, with his consistency attracting attention from some of Europe’s biggest clubs. His ability to break up play and distribute possession effectively could provide valuable depth to Arteta’s midfield options.

With Arsenal aiming to remain competitive at the highest level both domestically and in Europe, strengthening midfield depth is expected to remain a priority during the transfer window.

While Manchester United and Juventus remain interested, Arsenal’s long-standing admiration for the midfielder could give them an advantage in negotiations if Sporting eventually decides to allow him to leave. The club’s continued monitoring of his situation demonstrates their commitment to securing his services when the opportunity arises.
