Arsenal legend's contract clause could ease a future Emirates return

Cesc Fabregas has inserted a clause into his contract at Como that would allow him to leave the Serie A club for a small release fee if Arsenal — or another of his former clubs — came calling for him as manager.

According to Chris Wheatley, the provision was agreed in advance specifically to keep that door open, meaning any club from Fabregas' past would not face lengthy negotiations or a substantial compensation package to prise him away from the Italian side.

A clause built for a possible return

The Spaniard has built a growing reputation on the touchline at Como, guiding the club to impressive results in Serie A and establishing himself as one of the more highly rated young coaches working in Europe.

The report indicates Fabregas would like to manage Arsenal at some stage in his career, and that the release clause is a practical step towards making that possible rather than an indication anything is imminent. He is not said to be in a rush to take the next step.

That distinction matters. There is no suggestion of a vacancy at the Emirates, and no suggestion Fabregas is actively seeking an exit from Como. What exists is a mechanism — one that would remove the usual obstacles that can complicate a managerial approach.

The Arsenal connection

Fabregas arrived in north London as a teenager from Barcelona's La Masia academy and became one of the defining figures of the post-Invincibles era, eventually captaining the side before returning to Catalonia in 2011.

He later spent four seasons at Chelsea, a spell that complicates his standing among sections of the Arsenal fanbase, before winding down his playing career at Monaco and then Como, where he moved into coaching.

His familiarity with the club's culture and expectations is often cited as a factor that would make him an attractive candidate should Arsenal ever need one. He knows the demands of the Emirates from the inside, and his playing career at the club spanned some of its most scrutinised years.

No vacancy, no timeline

Mikel Arteta remains in charge, and the report contains nothing to suggest that will change in the near future. Any conversation about Fabregas succeeding him is hypothetical at this stage.

Still, the existence of the clause is notable in itself. Managerial appointments at elite clubs are frequently slowed or derailed entirely by compensation disputes with a coach's current employer — Arsenal themselves had to negotiate with Manchester City to bring Arteta in as head coach in December 2019.

By agreeing the terms at Como in advance, Fabregas has ensured that particular hurdle would not apply. Whether the circumstances ever arise for it to be triggered is another matter entirely.

For now, the 39-year-old continues his work in Serie A, and the clause sits in his contract as an option rather than a plan. Arsenal's focus remains on the current campaign under Arteta, with Fabregas' name likely to surface in these conversations for as long as his stock in Italy continues to rise.
