Arsenal's scouting network has turned to Brazil once again, this time for a centre-back who will not even turn 17 until November.

Brazilian journalist Gustavo Tutinha reports that the Gunners are among the leading European clubs tracking Vasco da Gama defender Breno Sales, with Chelsea and Manchester City also monitoring the teenager.

Tutinha adds that Vasco have already rejected an approach worth up to €10 million for Sales, a figure that underlines how highly the Rio club rate the young centre-back. That rejection also hands Arsenal an early indication of what any serious pursuit would cost.

A familiar market for Arsenal

Brazil is well-trodden ground for the north London side. Arsenal already have Brazilian internationals established in the first-team squad, and the success of that pipeline has encouraged the club to keep scouting the South American market for players who can be identified before their valuations climb.

Sales fits that profile. He has not yet accumulated enough senior minutes to justify a fee in the region Vasco are asking for, but the level of interest from three of the Premier League's biggest recruiters suggests the projection on him is high.

Centre-back is also a position where Arsenal have shown a willingness to plan years in advance, both in the academy and in the senior squad, rather than reacting to short-term need.

No rush required

The key detail is the timeline. Under FIFA regulations, Sales cannot complete a move to Arsenal — or any European club — until he turns 18, which gives the Gunners a long runway to continue assessing him.

That delay cuts both ways. Arsenal can gather far more information on his development, his temperament and his readiness for European football before committing any money. Equally, Sales has the chance to prove in senior Brazilian football that he is the defender Vasco believe he can become, which would only push his price higher.

The presence of Chelsea and Manchester City in the race adds an obvious complication. Both clubs have been aggressive in the South American teenage market in recent years, and Chelsea in particular have built a reputation for striking early and securing agreements long before a player is eligible to travel.

Arsenal, for their part, are not under pressure to move immediately. The club's recruitment team has typically preferred to monitor rather than gamble on raw potential at inflated prices, and Vasco's valuation remains the sticking point.

It is worth stressing that this is a monitoring story rather than a concrete transfer situation. Tutinha is a well-connected voice on Brazilian football matters, but interest at this stage does not equate to negotiations, and no formal Arsenal bid has been reported.

For now, Sales remains a name on a list that the Gunners will revisit as his senior career at Vasco develops over the coming seasons.
