Julian Alvarez reportedly favours a move to Arsenal over Barcelona as speculation intensifies around the Atletico Madrid forward’s summer plans.

The 26-year-old Argentine, who joined Atletico from Manchester City last summer, has emerged as one of the most coveted forwards in European football following his impressive performances in La Liga.

Alvarez ‘focuses’ on Arsenal discussions

According to Spanish outlet El Nacional, Alvarez has made it clear to his representatives that he does not want them to negotiate a potential move to Barcelona ahead of the summer transfer window.

Instead, the former City striker is said to be focusing all discussions on Arsenal, which he considers a more stable destination at this moment. The report claims talks over a potential move to north London are already at an ‘advanced’ stage.

Alvarez is reportedly seeking stability and continuity in a competitive long-term project, with Arsenal described as offering both sporting and contractual security that Barcelona cannot fully guarantee due to ongoing financial constraints.

Barcelona concerns ‘cool’ interest

While Barcelona are said to admire Alvarez’s pressing ability, mobility and goalscoring instinct as ideal qualities for their No. 9 position, financial uncertainty has ultimately ‘cooled’ any real possibility of a move to Catalonia.

From Arsenal’s perspective, the report states the club have moved quickly and decisively in their pursuit. Alvarez is said to view London as the ideal place to continue his development, seeing a clear role for himself within Mikel Arteta’s team and the chance to compete at the highest level across all competitions.

However, football.london understands that while Arsenal’s interest is genuine and the club are well-placed to make a potential move, any deal would require a significant fee, meaning player sales will be essential this summer.

The Gunners spent around £250million on seven permanent signings last summer, with Piero Hincapie also arriving on loan. With Gabriel Jesus, Gabriel Martinelli and Ben White all linked with potential departures, offloading some of these players could trim the wage bill and generate the funds needed to pursue a major signing like Alvarez.

Arsenal’s ability to offer Champions League football and compete for major trophies appears to have given them an advantage in the race for Alvarez’s signature, with the Argentine viewing the Emirates as his preferred destination for the next phase of his career.
