Despite having the best defensive record in the Premier League last year, Mikel Arteta and sporting director Edu are keen to add more depth to their backline.

The Gunners already have a well-stocked defensive unit with versatile players such as Ben White, Jakub Kiwior, Takehiro Tomiyasu, and Oleksandr Zinchenko, all capable of covering multiple positions.

Jurrien Timber, who is set to return from a serious knee injury, also adds to the options available.

However, Zinchenko’s potential exit from the Emirates Stadium has prompted Arsenal to seek further reinforcements.

Arsenal Interested in a Riccardo Calafiori Transfer

Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has reported that Arsenal have presented a formal long-term proposal to Italy international Riccardo Calafiori.

The 22-year-old defender has been a standout performer for Bologna, contributing to their surprising fifth-place finish in Serie A, which secured them a spot in the Champions League.

Initially, it was believed that Calafiori preferred to stay in Serie A, with Juventus being his likely destination if they made a suitable offer.

However, Romano indicates that the primary contenders for his signature now are Arsenal and their London rivals, Chelsea.

Potential Deal Details

As it stands, Arsenal have yet to agree on a fee with Bologna.

Reports from Corriere dello Sport suggest that an offer of €47m (£39.79m) has been made.

Calafiori, who recently featured in Euro 2024, is valued for his ability to play both as a centre-back and left-back.

This versatility makes him an attractive prospect for clubs looking to adapt to different defensive setups.

Race for the Signature

Calafiori has only played 43 times in Serie A but has shown immense potential, indicating a bright future ahead.

His ability to perform at both centre-back and left-back provides tactical flexibility for teams.

While Chelsea is also interested, their current wage structure at Stamford Bridge may hinder them from offering a more lucrative deal than Arsenal.

Much depends on whether Chelsea decide to intensify their pursuit, but Arsenal are currently in a strong position to secure the young defender’s services.

The addition of Calafiori would not only add depth to Arsenal’s defense but also bring in a player with the potential to become a key figure in their future successes.
