Arsenal revive interest in Spain full-back with €80m clause

Arsenal have gone back in for a right-back they have tracked since his teenage years at Real Valladolid, with Ivan Fresneda once again on the club's radar.
According to Sport Witness, the Gunners have reignited their interest in the 22-year-old, who now plays his football at Sporting Clube de Portugal. Barcelona are also said to be monitoring his situation.

Fresneda was one of the most hyped full-backs in Europe when he first broke through in Spain, and his move to Lisbon has given him the platform to turn that promise into consistent senior output. He has recently earned his first call-up to the Spain senior squad, a milestone that has pushed his profile — and his price — upwards.
The €80m question
The numbers are the sticking point. Fresneda's current deal at Sporting runs until 2028 and carries an €80 million release clause, which already puts him in a bracket few clubs would meet for a full-back.
Sporting are not standing still either. Aware of the growing interest from across the continent, the Portuguese side have accelerated talks over an extension that would tie Fresneda down until 2031. Any new deal would almost certainly come with revised terms, making a future transfer even more expensive for Arsenal and their rivals.
Sporting reportedly view Fresneda as a potential future captain and are determined to keep him in Lisbon, which adds another layer of difficulty to any approach.
Where he would fit
Arsenal are well stocked at right-back on paper, with Ben White and Jurrien Timber both available to Mikel Arteta. The issue has been availability rather than quality — both have had their seasons disrupted by injury problems in recent campaigns, which has repeatedly forced Arteta into reshuffles across the back four.
Fresneda would arrive as genuine competition rather than a replacement, and at 22 he fits the profile of player Arsenal have consistently targeted under the current recruitment structure: young, with international pedigree and resale value built in.
Adapting to the Premier League would be a step up from the Primeira Liga, though his athleticism and comfort on the ball are the traits that first drew scouts to him at Valladolid. Sporting have also become a well-trodden route to the Premier League in recent years, which gives clubs plenty of recent data to work with.
It is worth noting that Sport Witness are an aggregator of overseas reporting rather than a tier-one source, so this is best filed under long-term interest rather than an imminent move. Arsenal's history with Fresneda stretches back years without a bid ever materialising.
With Barcelona circling and Sporting pushing hard for an extension, the window for Arsenal to act at anything close to a reasonable fee is narrowing. The next few months of contract talks in Lisbon will determine whether this remains a realistic pursuit or becomes another name on the list of long-term targets who got away.
