Arsenal's 15-year-old signing earns senior international call-up

Phoenix Blayney has trained with the Northern Ireland senior squad at the age of 15, just months after agreeing to join Arsenal.
The goalkeeper, currently on the books at Larne, was brought into Michael O'Neill's first-team environment on Sunday ahead of Northern Ireland's Nations League meeting with Georgia. He was joined by fellow 15-year-old Michael Mulholland, a striker, with both players presented with signed Northern Ireland shirts to mark the occasion, according to the Evening Standard.

Arsenal move already agreed
Arsenal confirmed during the summer that Blayney will form part of their 2027/28 scholar intake, with the shot-stopper also putting pen to paper on a pre-contract agreement to sign professional terms with the north London club.
That makes him one of the earliest-secured prospects on the Gunners' books, and it reflects a recruitment approach that has increasingly seen Arsenal move early for young talent from across Britain and Ireland rather than waiting for competition to build.
Blayney has come through Northern Ireland's JD National Academy, a programme built around 24 elite players at under-15 and under-16 level. He is regarded as one of the standout graduates of that system to date, and his progress has now registered with the senior setup.
O'Neill's youth focus
O'Neill is in his second spell in charge of Northern Ireland, having now spent 11 years in the job across the two stints. Youth development has been a clear priority of his recent tenure, and the decision to expose teenagers such as Blayney and Mulholland to the senior environment fits that pattern.
It is worth stressing what this is and what it is not. Blayney has not been named in a matchday squad and is not in contention to play against Georgia. Training alongside the senior group is an acknowledgement of his development rather than a step towards a cap, and at 15 he remains some way from first-team football at any level.
The timing is notable for Northern Ireland, who have made an unbeaten start to their Nations League campaign. O'Neill's side have won away at Georgia and Ukraine and drawn 0-0 with Hungary at Windsor Park, leaving them top of group B2 on seven points.
They have also yet to concede in three matches. Another clean sheet against Georgia on Monday night would give Northern Ireland their longest such run in nine years — a useful backdrop for a young goalkeeper getting his first look at the senior environment.
A long road ahead
For Arsenal, the goalkeeping pathway is one area where the academy has historically had to be patient, with the position demanding a longer development curve than most. Blayney will not arrive at London Colney as a scholar until 2027/28, meaning there are two full seasons of growth ahead before he formally enters the system.
For now, the 15-year-old continues his development at Larne, with his reputation climbing on both sides of the Irish Sea.
