Arsenal slip behind Man City — but Opta still favours the Gunners

Arsenal's first Premier League defeat of the season has tightened the picture at the top of the table considerably.

The Gunners travelled to the Amex level on points with Manchester City, having won each of their opening four league matches. Saturday's 3-0 loss at Brighton ended that record and handed City the chance to move clear.

Pep Guardiola's side duly took it, beating Sunderland 5-3 on Sunday to maintain a perfect start. City now sit top with 15 points from five matches, with Arsenal second on 12 and Brighton third on 10 after their win over Mikel Arteta's side.

The gap at the top — and the one behind

Arsenal are three points adrift of City, with Fabian Hurzeler's Brighton just two points further back. Five games into a 38-match campaign, the margins remain slim in both directions.

What has changed is the complexion of the early title race. Arsenal's perfect start had kept them shoulder to shoulder with the champions-elect pace of City, and one afternoon on the south coast has created the first meaningful gap between the two sides this season.

Brighton's emergence adds another layer. Having beaten the defending champions emphatically, they now sit within touching distance of second place.

The international break arrives at a point where Arteta's response becomes the story. Arsenal will want to ensure a single defeat does not develop into a difficult run when league football resumes.

Opta's model tells a different story

Despite City's three-point advantage, the statistical outlook remains extremely close — and still marginally in Arsenal's favour.

According to Opta Analyst's Premier League prediction model, Arsenal have a 43.52% chance of winning the title, ahead of Manchester City on 40.96%. Brighton are given a 3.90% chance.

The projected final points totals are similarly tight. Opta forecasts Arsenal to finish on 76.06 points, with City on 75.64 — a difference of less than half a point across an entire season.

Those figures will shift significantly as results accumulate, but they offer a counterpoint to a table that currently shows City clear at the summit.

City hold the advantage on points right now, and Brighton have moved onto Arsenal's shoulder. For the Gunners, the fortnight ahead offers time to reset before the schedule resumes and the response to a first setback of the campaign begins in earnest.
