Arsenal have told staff that 60 jobs are at risk of redundancy, with the announcement landing just days after Mikel Arteta was handed a new contract worth £20million a year, making him the Premier League's highest paid manager.

Morale within the club is understood to have dropped sharply as a result. According to the Mirror, which cites reporting from the Telegraph, the mood has been described as low at a time when Arsenal are enjoying their best period on the pitch in two decades, having been crowned Premier League champions five months ago.

Staff in the catering and travel departments are among those affected by the restructure. The men's and women's first team performance and coaching staff are not impacted, nor are staff from the academy, Arsenal Women, Arsenal in the Community, the Arsenal Foundation or the club's site security teams.

Those whose roles are at risk could be offered opportunities elsewhere within the club as part of the process, which is aimed at addressing Arsenal's financial position. The club has recorded a loss every year since Arteta was appointed manager.

Arteta responds to the redundancies

Asked directly about the job cuts, Arteta said it was not his place to comment on the specifics of the decision.
