Declan Rice has been backed to claim the Premier League Player of the Season award if Arsenal secure the league title, with the midfielder’s exceptional performances putting him in contention for individual honours.

The England international has been a standout performer for the Gunners this campaign, playing a central role in their strong title challenge and consistently delivering high-level performances in the heart of Arteta’s midfield.

Rice’s influence has been particularly significant throughout the season. His ability to control games, break up opposition play, and contribute in key moments has established him as one of the most important players in the Arsenal squad.

Fernandes emerges as main rival

However, Rice faces stiff competition from Manchester United’s Bruno Fernandes, who has also been exceptional this term. The Portuguese midfielder has carried his team through difficult periods and produced consistent performances that have kept him in the running for the individual accolade.

If Arsenal fall short in the title race, Fernandes could emerge as the leading candidate given his crucial contributions to United’s campaign and his impact on their performances throughout the season.

Alan Shearer has weighed in on the debate, emphasising how team success often influences individual recognition. According to Independent Sport, the Newcastle legend said:

“I mean, he (Fernandes) might rub one or two people up the wrong way, but I think in terms of performances, he’s been absolutely outstanding. And there’s no doubt he’s been the pick of the bunch for Manchester United for such a long time now.”

Shearer continued: “However, with Declan Rice, the way he’s dragged Arsenal through games as well. I think it depends on what will happen in terms of teams winning.”

Title race could prove decisive

The former England striker believes Arsenal’s potential success could tip the scales in Rice’s favour, adding: “If Arsenal were to win the treble or a double, depending on what that double may be, then it would probably have to be an Arsenal player, and Rice has been one of the standouts.”

Both Rice and Fernandes have enjoyed outstanding seasons, each playing pivotal roles for their respective teams. The destination of the Premier League title could ultimately determine which player receives recognition as the competition’s finest performer.

If Arsenal achieve their ambitions this season, Rice’s contributions throughout their campaign may prove impossible for voters to ignore when selecting the Premier League’s standout individual.
