Arsenal’s pursuit of Bayern Munich midfielder Leon Goretzka has taken a significant turn, with the German international now reportedly preferring a move to Serie A over the Premier League.
The 29-year-old is set to become a free agent when his Bayern contract expires at the end of the season, making him an attractive target for clubs across Europe. Arsenal have been monitoring the midfielder as they consider strengthening their squad with experienced options.

Goretzka has decided to leave Bayern Munich after seven years at the Allianz Arena, where he has made over 200 appearances and won multiple Bundesliga titles. His availability on a free transfer has naturally attracted interest from several top European clubs.
Preference shifts to Italy
According to Fichajes, Goretzka’s stance on his next destination has evolved significantly. While the midfielder was initially believed to favour a Premier League move – which would have benefited Arsenal’s chances – he now appears to be leaning towards Serie A instead.
This development has opened the door for Italian giants AC Milan and Juventus, both of whom are reportedly interested in securing the German’s services. The shift in preference represents a considerable challenge to Arsenal’s hopes of landing the experienced midfielder.
The change in direction could be influenced by various factors, including playing time guarantees, tactical fit, or simply the appeal of experiencing a new league and culture after his time in the Bundesliga.
Arsenal still in contention
Despite Goretzka’s apparent preference for Italy, Arsenal are not necessarily out of the running. The Gunners possess significant financial strength and an attractive project under Mikel Arteta that could still appeal to the midfielder.
With no transfer fee required due to his free agent status, the focus will be on convincing Goretzka that north London represents the best next step in his career. Arsenal’s recent progress in the Premier League and Champions League could work in their favour when presenting their vision.
The situation remains fluid, with several months left in the season before any final decisions need to be made. This gives Arsenal time to prepare their pitch and potentially adjust their offer to remain competitive with their Italian counterparts.
Goretzka brings considerable experience at the highest level, having featured regularly for both Bayern Munich and Germany. His versatility in midfield and proven track record in major competitions would make him a valuable addition to any squad looking to compete on multiple fronts.
The coming months will reveal whether Arsenal can convince the German international that the Premier League represents his best option, or if Serie A will indeed become his next destination.
