Arsenal technical director James Ellis has confirmed his departure from the club after nearly five years with the Gunners, including seven months in his most recent role.
Ellis announced his exit via a LinkedIn post, bringing to an end a journey that began in 2021 when he joined as a first-team scout. He subsequently served as head of recruitment before his promotion to technical director.

The departure appears to be linked to internal restructuring at the Emirates Stadium following Andrea Berta’s arrival as sporting director last year.
Ellis reflects on Arsenal journey
In his LinkedIn statement, Ellis wrote: “I recently departed Arsenal Football Club, where in nearly 5 years I gave my all in an attempt to help contribute to supporting the development of elite level club and its high performance environment.”
“The most notable memory of my time there, was coming across a number of wonderful people who (from various backgrounds and various levels of expertise), saw the world of opportunity, responsibility, custodianship and contribution the same as I do.”
The 46-year-old expressed gratitude for his time at Arsenal, stating he would “like to wish the Club the very best for the future” while thanking those who helped shape his career.
Extensive football background
Ellis brings considerable experience to his next role, having worked in football for over 25 years across various levels. His career began in non-league football before taking a significant step up when he joined Swedish club Ostersund as a scout in 2011.
Prior to his Arsenal stint, Ellis gained valuable experience at Birmingham City in opponent analysis and at Fulham as a scout, building the foundation for his eventual move to north London.
His departure represents another change in Arsenal’s backroom structure as the club continues to evolve under Mikel Arteta’s management. The arrival of Berta as sporting director has clearly triggered a reshuffling of responsibilities within the technical department.
Ellis concluded his statement by looking ahead: “I look forward to the next opportunity to continue to do so,” suggesting he remains committed to contributing to football at the highest level despite his Arsenal exit.
