Arsenal technical director James Ellis has confirmed his departure from the club after just seven months in the role, announcing his exit through an emotional LinkedIn statement.

Ellis, who spent nearly five years with the Gunners, was promoted to technical director from his previous position as head of recruitment. His departure comes as part of an internal restructuring following the arrival of sporting director Andrea Berta last summer.

In his farewell message, Ellis wrote: “Time to take the next step… I recently departed Arsenal Football Club, where in nearly 5 years I gave my all in an attempt to help contribute to supporting the development of elite level club and its high performance environment.”

The 25-year industry veteran joined Arsenal in 2021 as a first-team scout before working his way up through the recruitment structure. His departure represents another significant change in the club’s backroom operations as Arteta’s side continue to compete at the highest level.

Restructuring continues

Ellis’s exit follows a period of significant change within Arsenal’s sporting structure. According to The Standard, the club has undergone internal restructuring in recent months as they adapt to Berta’s arrival and influence.

The Italian sporting director joined from Atletico Madrid with a wealth of experience in player recruitment and club operations, bringing a different approach to Arsenal’s transfer strategy and talent identification processes.

Ellis reflected on his time at the Emirates Stadium, highlighting the relationships he built during his tenure: “The most notable memory of my time there, was coming across a number of wonderful people who saw the world of opportunity, responsibility, custodianship and contribution the same as I do.”

Looking ahead

The outgoing technical director expressed gratitude for his time in north London while looking forward to new challenges. His departure adds to the ongoing evolution of Arsenal’s administrative structure as the club continues to develop its operations both on and off the pitch.

Ellis concluded his statement by thanking those who helped shape his career and expressing his desire to continue supporting others in fulfilling their potential within football organizations.

Arsenal will now look to fill the technical director role as they continue their pursuit of Premier League and Champions League success under Arteta’s guidance.
