Arsenal teenager makes England U20 debut after late call-up

Andre Harriman-Annous has added another line to a fast-growing CV, making his England Under-20 debut during this month's international fixtures.

The 18-year-old, who already has senior football for Arsenal under his belt, came off the bench in England's 2-1 win over France — his first appearance at that level after previously representing the Three Lions at U18 level in May 2025.

A call-up that arrived the hard way

Harriman-Annous was not initially part of Ian Carsley's group. According to Jeorge Bird, the Arsenal youngster was named on the standby list for this international window and was only promoted into the squad proper after West Bromwich Albion forward Jimmy Jay Morgan picked up an injury.

He was not the only Gunner to benefit. Arsenal goalkeeper Khari Ranson was also added to the England U20 squad, coming in for Finlay Herrick — a reflection of how deep Arsenal's representation now runs through the England youth setup.

Having taken his chance with a debut appearance, Harriman-Annous will be hopeful of further opportunities at U20 level as the season progresses.

A positional shift at Hale End

Perhaps the most interesting detail of Harriman-Annous' development is where he has been playing. Bird reports that the teenager has been used more regularly as a central striker at youth level of late, having spent much of the previous period operating on the left wing following the arrival of Evan Mooney last winter.

That spell out wide is described as having helped round out his all-round game, but the expectation is that his long-term future lies in a more central role — a view built on his hold-up play and his physical presence, two attributes that translate well to the demands of senior football.

It is a familiar pattern at Arsenal, where academy forwards are often moved around the front line to broaden their understanding of the game before settling into a defined position.

Loan move on the horizon?

The next step could take him away from north London, at least temporarily. Bird suggests that should Harriman-Annous continue to progress at youth level, a first loan move could become a possibility in the January transfer window.

Arsenal have leaned increasingly on temporary exits to accelerate the development of their brightest academy prospects, and a player who has already sampled senior minutes for the club would be an obvious candidate for regular first-team football elsewhere.

For now, the focus remains on building momentum. A first England U20 cap, a clearer positional identity and senior Arsenal experience already banked represent a strong platform for the rest of the campaign.

The January window will offer the clearest indication yet of where the club believes Harriman-Annous' development is best served next.
