TalkSport host Adrian Durham has urged Arsenal academy prospect Max Dowman to consider leaving the Emirates Stadium, warning that staying could be detrimental to his career development.
The 16-year-old midfielder has emerged as one of Arsenal’s most promising academy talents in recent years and has already begun making appearances for the senior team. Dowman recently came off the bench against Everton to help the Gunners secure a crucial victory when they appeared to be dropping points.

The teenager is working his way back from a long-term injury suffered while playing for Arsenal’s youth sides and is expected to feature more regularly for the first team in the coming months. His performances in the academy have consistently impressed, with the youngster often playing above his age level.
Durham’s stark warning
Despite Dowman’s evident promise, Durham believes the youngster should look elsewhere for his development. According to JustArsenal, the TalkSport presenter said:
Max Dowman needs to leave Arsenal as soon as possible. Dowman has seen Myles Lewis-Skelly’s career derailed by Mikel Arteta. He’s not even third choice left-back now – [Piero] Hincapie and [Riccardo] Calafiori ahead of him in a Wembley final.
Durham’s comments point to the challenges young players face at top clubs, where breaking into the first team can prove difficult even for highly-rated prospects. The pundit appears to be using Lewis-Skelly’s current situation as evidence of how promising careers can stall at elite level.
Crucial development phase
At this early stage of his professional journey, Dowman appears content to trust Arsenal’s development plans at the Emirates. The club seems committed to allowing him to progress naturally without rushing his integration into senior football.
However, the balance between development and playing time will become increasingly important as the midfielder continues his recovery from injury. Consistent first-team opportunities may ultimately determine whether he fulfils his potential at Arsenal or needs to seek those chances elsewhere.
The decisions Dowman makes over the next 12-18 months could prove pivotal in shaping his career trajectory. Arsenal will be hoping their carefully managed approach to his development pays dividends and keeps one of their brightest prospects at the club for years to come.
