Arsenal tracking Santos teenager compared to Julian Alvarez

Arsenal are monitoring a 16-year-old Brazilian attacker who has drawn comparisons with Julian Alvarez, with up to six European clubs said to be tracking his progress at Santos.

The player in question is Ignacio Pereira, who has been developing rapidly in the Santos U17 side and has established himself as one of the standout teenage attackers in Brazil at his age group.

According to RTI Esporte, as many as six top European teams are interested in signing Pereira in the next transfer window, with Arsenal among the clubs keeping tabs on him.

Why the Alvarez comparison matters

The Alvarez link carries extra weight given Arsenal's recent transfer activity. The Gunners wanted to add the Manchester City attacker to their squad in the last window and reportedly remain interested in him.

City themselves took the South American route with Alvarez, identifying and signing him from River Plate long before he arrived in the Premier League. Pereira's situation offers a similar model, albeit at a far earlier stage of the process.

Santos, for their part, consider Pereira one of the top talents they will soon export to Europe. That reputation has already pulled scouts from across the continent towards their youth setup.

The pre-contract route

There is one significant obstacle. Pereira cannot move clubs until he turns 18, meaning any interested side would have to wait before completing a deal and integrating him into their squad.

What Arsenal can do is move early. A pre-contract agreement would allow the club to secure his future now and beat the other European sides circling, with the actual transfer following once he reaches the required age.

That is a decision the recruitment team will have to weigh up. Committing to a 16-year-old who is still playing U17 football carries obvious risk, but waiting until he is 18 would mean entering an auction against five or more clubs with deep pockets.

Arsenal have shown a willingness to scout globally and recruit young talent early, and Brazil has become an increasingly common hunting ground for Premier League clubs looking to get ahead of the market.

One to watch

It is worth stressing the stage of this story. This is interest in a teenager, reported by a Brazilian outlet, with no suggestion yet of a formal approach or negotiation. Pereira is not close to a move, and nothing can happen on the transfer front until he is legally able to leave.

What is clear is that his performances in the Santos academy have put him firmly on the radar of Europe's biggest clubs, and Arsenal are among those paying attention.
