Arsenal are keeping a close eye on a contract situation at Anfield that has dragged on for months, with Liverpool yet to tie down teenage winger Rio Ngumoha to improved terms.

Ngumoha turned 18 on 29 August, making him eligible for a new and improved deal. More than a month on, no agreement has been reached.

The Liverpool Echo reports that talks between the club and the player's representatives have been ongoing for several months without progress, and that resolving Ngumoha's future will be one of the first major tasks for Liverpool's incoming sporting director.

Why Arsenal are interested

Ngumoha arrived on Merseyside after leaving Chelsea and has since become a permanent fixture in the Liverpool first-team squad, earning regular minutes at a stage of his career when many players his age are still in academy football.

That exposure has only strengthened his reputation as one of the most highly rated English talents of his age group, and it is the reason his name has been linked with the Gunners in recent weeks.

Liverpool's stance has been communicated clearly: Ngumoha is not for sale. The Reds also turned down interest from Bayern Munich over the summer and want to extend both the length and the value of his current deal.

A waiting game in north London

The report indicates Arsenal are monitoring rather than moving. The logic is straightforward — an unresolved contract situation creates uncertainty, and prolonged uncertainty can eventually create an opening.

Should talks continue to stall, the Gunners could be tempted to test Liverpool's resolve with a formal offer. For now, though, there is no suggestion that a bid is imminent or that Liverpool's position has softened.

It is worth noting the sourcing here. This is a Liverpool-focused report about a Liverpool contract issue, with the Arsenal angle framed as interest and observation rather than active negotiation. That is a long way from a deal being close.

What is not in dispute is the trajectory. A winger who is already playing first-team football at 18 for one of the Premier League's biggest clubs is going to attract attention, and every additional appearance raises his profile further.

Liverpool are aware of that, which is precisely why they are pushing to get the paperwork signed. The longer it takes, the more the situation will be watched from outside.

Arsenal, for their part, appear content to stay patient and see how the negotiations develop before deciding whether there is anything worth pursuing.
