Inter Edge Out Arsenal with Calhanoglu’s Penalty

Arsenal’s struggles continued as they suffered a narrow 1-0 defeat to Inter Milan in the Champions League, their second loss in a row after last Saturday’s Premier League setback against Newcastle.

Hakan Calhanoglu’s first-half penalty made the difference, with the Gunners unable to find a way past Inter’s solid defence despite a more aggressive second-half performance.

The loss underlined a challenging period for Mikel Arteta’s side, who were without key players like Declan Rice and only saw captain Martin Odegaard return as a substitute after a 12-game absence due to injury.

A Struggling Arsenal Offence in the Face of Milanese Defence

The evening began under a thick Milanese fog, adding to Arsenal’s recent haze of uncertain form. Inter made an immediate impact, with Denzel Dumfries hitting the crossbar within minutes and pressing Arsenal’s backline from the start.

In the absence of Rice, Arsenal’s midfield struggled to generate chances, particularly in a disjointed first half that saw few Arsenal shots on target.

Arteta’s 4-4-2 formation with Kai Havertz and Leandro Trossard up front failed to create the attacking spark Arsenal needed.

The Gunners’ attempts to break through were thwarted time and again by Inter’s structured and resolute defence, and an off-target shot from Bukayo Saka was one of the few moments of offensive note for Arsenal in the first half.

Even the reliable Gabriel Martinelli found little joy on the left wing, as Inter’s towering defenders consistently cleared his crosses.

The decisive moment arrived just before the break, when Mikel Merino’s raised arm blocked Mehdi Taremi’s effort in the box, conceding a penalty that Calhanoglu smoothly converted.

Arsenal went into halftime down 1-0 and visibly shaken by Inter’s unrelenting pressure and tactical discipline.

Second-Half Adjustments Fall Short

In response to the team’s lacklustre first half, Arteta brought on Gabriel Jesus to replace Merino, moving Havertz back into midfield to inject some dynamism.

Arsenal pushed harder in the second half, creating a series of close calls but falling short at every turn.

Saka’s corners and set-pieces created dangerous chances, one of which saw Dumfries clear Gabriel Magalhaes’ header off the line.

Havertz’s curling effort towards the top corner seemed destined for the net, only for Inter keeper Yann Sommer to parry it away.

Saka’s deliveries kept pressure on Inter, but Arsenal’s efforts proved futile as Inter’s defence held firm, repeatedly blocking and frustrating Arsenal’s forwards.

In the final ten minutes, Arteta brought on the promising Ethan Nwaneri and Oleksandr Zinchenko to add width and creativity in hopes of finding an equaliser.

However, as Inter’s fans grew louder, Arsenal’s push for a goal dwindled, with the side left searching for form ahead of their next Premier League challenge.

Looking Ahead with Uncertainty

For Arsenal, this defeat in Milan highlighted their ongoing need to find cohesion and offensive fluidity, especially in the absence of pivotal figures like Rice.

Arsenal’s last visit to San Siro in 2003 saw them dominate with players like Thierry Henry and Robert Pires leading the way, a contrast to today’s frustration.

As they now look ahead to Sunday’s Premier League match against Chelsea, Arteta and his side face increasing pressure to find solutions and rediscover the form that had positioned them as title contenders earlier this season.
