Arteta set to break major record after Guardiola’s Man City exit

Mikel Arteta is set to become the longest-serving manager in English football’s top four divisions following Pep Guardiola’s expected departure from Manchester City at the end of the season.

According to Football London, Guardiola is expected to step down from his role at the Etihad Stadium this summer despite having one year remaining on his contract.

The Spaniard’s exit, combined with Harrogate Town’s relegation to the National League, will see Arteta claim the record when the new season begins. The Arsenal boss rejoined the Gunners as head coach on December 20, 2019, and has transformed the club’s fortunes over his four-and-a-half-year tenure.

Significant gap to nearest rival

Arteta will hold a commanding 10-month advantage over the next longest-serving manager, Nigel Clough of Mansfield Town. The milestone represents a remarkable achievement in an era where managerial changes are increasingly frequent across all levels of English football.

Remarkably, Harrogate’s Simon Weaver had been the Football League’s longest-serving boss, having taken charge of the Yorkshire club back in 2009. However, their relegation from League Two by a single point means they will compete in non-league football next season.

Contract talks on the horizon

The record comes as Arsenal prepare to offer Arteta a new contract extension, with the club making his future their top priority regardless of how the current campaign concludes. The north London side remain in contention for both Premier League and Champions League glory this season.

When asked about contract discussions in April, Arteta remained focused on the immediate challenges ahead. “There is no news on that. We don’t have time to discuss that now. The full focus is on what we have to do from here until the end of the season,” he stated.

The Arsenal manager also declined to comment on speculation surrounding his former mentor’s future when questioned following the Gunners’ 1-0 victory over Burnley. “I cannot comment on that. I think the day that he makes the decision to stay or leave, then we can comment,” Arteta said.

City are expected to confirm Guardiola’s departure before their final Premier League fixture against Aston Villa. The Spanish tactician’s exit would mark the end of an era at the Etihad, where he has won multiple Premier League titles and the Champions League.
