Mikel Arteta has committed his long-term future to Arsenal, signing a new four-year contract that runs until June 2030 and will take his reign at the club beyond a decade if he sees it through to its conclusion.

The deal, worth more than £20m a season according to the Guardian, makes Arteta the best-paid manager in the Premier League. It represents a significant increase on his previous contract, understood to have been worth around £10m a season plus a £5m bonus for Champions League qualification, and reflects the club's reward for last season's title triumph that ended a 22-year wait for the championship following three consecutive runners-up finishes.

Arteta took charge of Arsenal in December 2019, succeeding Unai Emery, and is now the longest-serving manager in the Premier League following Pep Guardiola's departure from Manchester City. The Spaniard previously captained Arsenal under Arsène Wenger before returning as head coach.

'Only the beginning'

Arteta framed the new deal as the start of a new chapter rather than a reward for past achievements.
