Ben White has been told he must “clear the air” with his England teammates after returning to the national squad for the first time in four years.

The Arsenal defender last represented his country in March 2022 and was selected for the Qatar World Cup later that year, but left the camp for “personal reasons” following a disagreement with then-assistant manager Steve Holland.

White, 28, subsequently made himself “unavailable for selection” throughout former England manager Gareth Southgate’s remaining tenure, which concluded after the Euros in July 2024.

Current England boss Thomas Tuchel explained his decision to recall the defender, stating: “I think everyone deserves a second chance. I don’t know exactly what happened. I was not 100% interested in that as I wanted to open a new page.”

According to BBC Sport, Tuchel revealed White’s immediate enthusiasm when offered the recall: “Once I asked Ben if he would be ready to play for me and for England he straight away, and without hesitation, said he would love that and he was desperate to come back.”

“I think it’s necessary he clears the air with team-mates and I think he will when players come back, who were in the World Cup with him.”

White’s recall came after Liverpool defender Jarrell Quansah suffered a late injury. Tuchel described the Arsenal man’s reaction as “euphoric” and “emotional,” adding that his response “came within seconds” and demonstrated genuine commitment.

Arsenal form earns recognition

Despite starting just 15 times for Arsenal this season, White’s performances in the club’s Carabao Cup final defeat to Manchester City and Champions League last 16 run caught Tuchel’s attention.

“It was a chance to meet him in person,” Tuchel explained, highlighting the defender’s versatility across right-back and centre-back positions.

The German manager has named a 35-man squad for friendlies against Uruguay on Friday and Japan on Tuesday, with 11 players including captain Harry Kane and Arsenal duo Bukayo Saka and Declan Rice joining the camp on Saturday morning after being given rest time.

Tuchel’s tough choices

White’s recall represents one of several bold decisions by Tuchel, who has again omitted Real Madrid’s Trent Alexander-Arnold. The former Liverpool defender hasn’t been selected since June last year.

“It’s just a choice. A sporting choice. A difficult choice and maybe a hard choice – and maybe to a certain degree unfair, but these choices have to be made,” Tuchel stated.

These friendlies mark the final international break before Tuchel names his World Cup squad for the tournament in the USA, Mexico and Canada this summer. White’s return after four years away provides the manager with additional defensive options as England prepare for the global stage.
