Ben White ruled out for rest of season with knee injury blow

Ben White will miss the remainder of Arsenal’s season after sustaining a significant knee injury during the Gunners’ 1-0 victory over West Ham on Sunday.

The England defender was forced off in the first half at the London Stadium and left the ground with his injured knee in a brace. Arsenal confirmed on Tuesday that the 28-year-old had suffered a “significant medial ligament injury” that will sideline him for the club’s final three fixtures, including the Champions League final against Paris Saint-Germain on 30 May.

World Cup hopes in doubt

The injury timing could not be worse for White, who was recalled to the England squad in March after a four-year absence under Thomas Tuchel. The England manager is set to name his 26-man World Cup squad a week on Friday, with White’s participation now in serious doubt.

White had made an immediate impact upon his international return, scoring his first England goal in March’s draw with Uruguay before starting against Japan four days later. The defender’s absence represents a significant blow to both his personal ambitions and England’s World Cup preparations.

Defensive crisis deepens

White’s injury compounds Arsenal’s defensive issues at a crucial stage of the season. The north London side are currently without both of their senior right-backs, with Jurriën Timber also sidelined since the win over Everton on 14 March due to a groin problem.

Mikel Arteta acknowledged last week that Timber may not feature again this season, stating: “There’s still a fair bit to do so everything has to be so smooth and quick if they want to have a chance to play any minutes.”

The Arsenal manager was forced to improvise against West Ham, initially moving Declan Rice to right-back before bringing on Cristhian Mosquera to replace Martín Zubimendi in what he later admitted was a tactical correction.

Arsenal’s medical team are now managing White’s recovery and rehabilitation programme, with the club stating they are “fully focused on supporting the aim of Ben being ready for the start of our pre-season preparations.”

The Gunners face Burnley and Crystal Palace in their remaining Premier League fixtures as they chase the club’s first league title in 22 years, before preparing for their Champions League final showdown with PSG in Budapest. White had started the past five matches in place of the injured Timber, highlighting his importance to Arteta’s defensive plans during this crucial period.
