Arsenal have suffered a setback in their pursuit of Atalanta midfielder Ederson, with the Brazilian international rejecting an approach from the club to focus on securing a move to Atletico Madrid instead.
The 25-year-old has established himself as one of Europe’s most accomplished midfielders during his time in Serie A and is widely expected to leave Atalanta at the end of the current season.

Contract situation forces Atalanta’s hand
Ederson will enter the final year of his contract this summer, placing Atalanta in a precarious position. Despite regarding the Brazilian as a key figure, the Italian club have been unable to reach an agreement over a new deal and are now prepared to consider offers rather than risk losing him on a free transfer.
This contract situation has attracted interest from multiple clubs across Europe, with Arsenal among those keen to strengthen their midfield options ahead of the summer transfer window.
Atletico Madrid emerge as frontrunners
However, Atletico Madrid have positioned themselves as the clear favourites for Ederson’s signature. According to AS, the Spanish club have been in discussions with the player’s representatives for an extended period and appear to have won the race for his services.
The report indicates that Ederson himself is inclined towards a move to Diego Simeone’s side and has already turned down Arsenal’s initial approach to focus on completing a transfer to the Wanda Metropolitano.
Andrea Berta, who has long admired the midfielder from his previous role at Atletico Madrid, could prove instrumental in any renewed Arsenal effort to change the player’s mind.
Arsenal maintain interest despite rejection
Despite this setback, Arsenal are not expected to abandon their pursuit entirely. With several months remaining before the transfer window opens, circumstances could yet change, and the north London side may attempt to persuade Ederson to reconsider his options.
The Gunners’ interest in the Atalanta star reflects their ongoing search for midfield reinforcements, particularly as they look to build a squad capable of sustained success across multiple competitions.
Ederson’s preference for Atletico Madrid leaves Arsenal facing a challenging task if they are to alter the outcome, but the club’s persistence in previous transfer sagas suggests they may not give up easily on a player they clearly value highly.
