Bruno Guimaraes sets Arsenal target and names two future clubs

Bruno Guimaraes has spoken about his ambition to return to Brazil one day — but only after he has won silverware at Arsenal.

The £75million summer signing from Newcastle was asked about a potential South American return while on international duty with Brazil in Australia, and he named the two clubs that hold a special place for him.

"Yes, I would like to return to Brazil, to play for Vasco [da Gama] or Athletico [Paranaense], teams I have a lot of gratitude for," Guimaraes said, as reported by football.london.

"But to be honest, I'm not thinking about that now. I just arrived at Arsenal, so I'm very focused. I want to win a championship there, I want to play, I want to make my mark with this new shirt. But ultimately, the future belongs to God."

Roots in Brazil, focus in north London

The 28-year-old came through at Athletico Paranaense before moving to Europe with Lyon in 2020, while he grew up supporting Vasco da Gama and attended one of their matches during the summer, shortly before completing his switch to the Premier League champions.

Guimaraes also reflected on leaving Newcastle after nearly five years on Tyneside, a spell in which he captained the club to their first trophy in 70 years.

"Newcastle is a club where I have a very beautiful history. I was the first captain to win a title there after 70 years, along with my teammates, so we made our mark on the club's history," he explained.

"I had already been at the club for almost 5 years, I felt inside that I needed a new challenge, I was ready for it, and I am very grateful to the club for everything it has given me."

Settling into a new routine

The midfielder was open about the adjustment that comes with such a high-profile move, admitting that a change of environment takes time.

"Now, starting my journey at Arsenal, starting well, starting on the right foot. A new responsibility, which I really wanted to take on," he said.

"I have to focus, because leaving a routine that I was already used to at the club and starting another one requires a little time, a little adaptation, but I think I'm doing well. I am very happy and excited about the new challenges."

Guimaraes has already opened his account for the Gunners, scoring in the 2-0 win at Sunderland. His first Premier League start came last Saturday, however, in a 3-0 defeat at Brighton.

He and Gabriel Magalhaes then faced a testing journey to link up with Brazil, with their flight diverted from Brisbane to Sydney because of poor weather. Guimaraes still took part in a light session with his international teammates once he arrived on the Gold Coast.

For now, the Brazilian's stated priority is clear: titles with Arsenal before any thoughts of a homecoming. Arteta will hope that the adaptation period Guimaraes described is a short one as the Gunners look to respond after the Brighton result.
