Riccardo Calafiori has provided a positive update on his fitness after complaining of “pain” following Arsenal’s Carabao Cup final defeat to Manchester City on Sunday.

The Italian defender came off the bench at Wembley Stadium but was unable to help the Gunners avoid a 2-0 loss that extended the club’s run of consecutive Carabao Cup final defeats to four.

Calafiori quickly travelled to join the Italy national team camp, where the Azzurri are preparing for crucial World Cup play-off matches. However, his arrival raised concerns when head coach Gennaro Gattuso revealed on Monday that the defender had complained of “a little pain” upon joining the squad.

Speaking to the media, Calafiori has now offered reassurance about his condition, stating: “I think I’m okay, we’ll see in training today.”

Arsenal’s mounting injury concerns

The update will come as welcome news for Arsenal, who are already dealing with a significant injury crisis. Six players have been forced to skip international duty due to fitness concerns, highlighting the physical toll of the season on Mikel Arteta’s squad.

Captain Martin Ødegaard remains sidelined with a knee injury that has kept him out for the past month, ruling him out of Norway’s fixtures. Eberechi Eze and Jurrien Timber were also forced to withdraw from the England and Netherlands squads respectively after picking up injuries during the week leading up to the final.

Perhaps most concerning for Arsenal was the post-final exodus from international duty. Gabriel, William Saliba and Leandro Trossard all featured at Wembley but withdrew from their respective national teams within hours of the defeat.

The defensive pair of Gabriel and Saliba have removed themselves from contention for Brazil and France respectively, while Trossard is out of the Belgium squad. This latest wave of withdrawals suggests the physical and mental toll of the final may have been more significant than initially apparent.

Crucial period ahead

Calafiori’s availability for Italy’s World Cup play-off against Northern Ireland on Thursday could provide valuable minutes for the defender, who has been working his way back to full fitness this season. According to The Standard, Gattuso expressed confidence that the Arsenal man would be ready for selection.

For Arsenal, maintaining Calafiori’s fitness will be crucial as they navigate a demanding fixture list with a depleted squad. The club will be hoping that their defender’s positive assessment proves accurate when he returns from international duty.
