Calafiori ranks second among Europe's defenders for goal contributions

Riccardo Calafiori has turned himself into one of the most productive defenders anywhere in Europe this season, and his goal in Arsenal's win over Leeds has only strengthened that case.
The Italian opened the scoring in Arsenal's victory, continuing a rich vein of form in front of goal. It came just days after he netted his first ever goal for the Italian national team, further proof that his attacking instincts are translating at both club and international level.

A defender with an attacker's output
Signed for his ability to progress the ball out of defence and help Arsenal build attacks, Calafiori has gone beyond simply carrying the ball into midfield. He has become a genuine goal threat, operating comfortably at either centre back or left back while still finding time to push forward into dangerous areas.
Mikel Arteta has given him license to make those forward runs, and Calafiori has made the most of it. His willingness to advance into attacking positions has become a notable feature of his game, adding a layer to Arsenal's play that extends well beyond his defensive duties.
Second only to De Cuyper across Europe's top five leagues
According to Football Italia, Calafiori's goal against Leeds pushed his tally to five goal contributions for club and country this season, placing him second among all defenders in Europe's top five leagues. Only Brighton's Maxim De Cuyper, with more contributions, sits above him in that particular metric.
It is a striking statistic for a player whose primary responsibilities remain defensive. Being ranked so highly alongside attacking full backs and wing backs from across the continent underlines just how influential Calafiori has become when Arsenal push forward.
His versatility has also proven valuable for Arteta, who can deploy him in multiple roles across the back line without sacrificing goal threat. That flexibility, combined with his composure in possession and eye for a forward run, has made him an increasingly important figure in Arsenal's setup this season.
Arsenal will be hoping Calafiori can sustain this output as the campaign progresses, with his dual threat offering the club a different dimension from defence. If his recent form is any indication, he looks set to remain a key contributor at both ends of the pitch for some time to come.
