Arsenal face a pivotal summer decision over Ethan Nwaneri after the 19-year-old’s challenging loan spell at Marseille draws to a close this weekend.

Marseille are set to play their final Ligue 1 match against Stade Rennes on Sunday, marking the end of Nwaneri’s stint in France. The Arsenal academy graduate has endured a difficult period with the French side, finding himself on the periphery under head coach Habib Beye.

Beye has been openly critical of the teenager’s application during his time at the Stade Vélodrome. “He’s a quality player, but he has to give us way more in his day-to-day commitment,” the Marseille boss said. “Other players gave way more.”

Despite showing glimpses of his potential with two goals and one assist in nine Ligue 1 appearances, Nwaneri has been an unused substitute in Marseille’s last three league matches. The arrangement includes a clause requiring Marseille to pay additional fees to Arsenal for failing to play the youngster sufficient minutes.

Arteta’s measured response

When questioned about Beye’s public criticism, Mikel Arteta offered a diplomatic response while drawing parallels to another Arsenal success story. “I think that’s the coach’s opinion, he’s with him every single day,” the Arsenal manager said. “He’s the one making the decision. He’s the one that sees and understands better what he’s doing, and Ethan has to respond to that in the right way.”

Arteta referenced William Saliba’s own challenging period at Marseille, suggesting the experience could prove beneficial in the long term. “It’s the same place that William Saliba was there, same club. And the outcome, let’s see. Maybe it’s the best thing that can happen for Ethan, for his career. Maybe, we don’t know.”

Summer decision looms

Arsenal now face three potential options for Nwaneri’s immediate future: integrating him back into the first-team squad, arranging another loan move, or sanctioning a permanent departure. The club’s hierarchy, led by sporting director Andrea Berta, are keen to improve their player sales record and maximize returns on academy talent.

According to Football London, Nwaneri came close to joining Borussia Dortmund last summer before performing a late U-turn and committing his future to Arsenal with a new contract.

The pathway to regular first-team football at Arsenal remains congested, with Martin Ødegaard established as the club’s creative fulcrum and promising academy prospect Max Dowman also competing for opportunities in similar positions.

While the Marseille experience may not have unfolded as anticipated, Arsenal have protected their investment in the talented attacking midfielder and would command a substantial fee should they decide to cash in on his potential this summer.
