Ethan Nwaneri sent ‘brutal message’ as Arsenal loan decision backfires

Ethan Nwaneri has received a stark warning from Marseille head coach Habib Beye, suggesting Arsenal’s decision to loan the talented midfielder to France may have backfired.

Despite Mason Greenwood’s injury creating an opportunity, the 18-year-old Arsenal loanee remains unlikely to earn a starting berth when Marseille face Monaco in Ligue 1.

Speaking ahead of the fixture, Beye delivered a clear message about Nwaneri’s current standing at the club.

“He [Nwaneri] is a big talent who needs to adapt to the intensity of Ligue 1,” Beye explained. “He looks like the ideal replacement for Mason but have several quality players to choose from. He must understand he’s come to a very, very high-level club.”

The comments suggest Nwaneri will continue his role as a substitute despite scoring off the bench when replacing Greenwood before the recent international break.

Dramatic change in fortunes

Under former manager Roberto De Zerbi, who has since joined Tottenham, Nwaneri flourished as one of Marseille’s number 10s and started every game he was available for. However, since Beye’s appointment, the England youth international has been limited to six substitute appearances and was even substituted after coming on as a substitute in one match.

The guaranteed playing time under De Zerbi was a crucial factor in Mikel Arteta’s decision to sanction the loan move. With Arsenal facing their own injury crisis, questions have emerged about whether keeping Nwaneri at the Emirates would have been the wiser choice.

Arteta defended the decision when pressed on the matter: “After making the decision, who could have predicted that Mikel was going to be out for five months and Kai? It’s unfortunate, in the end we have to make the decisions in the moment, understanding the context there.”

Internal praise amid external struggles

Despite his limited opportunities in France, Nwaneri continues to receive glowing reviews from within Arsenal. Gabriel Jesus recently highlighted the teenager’s exceptional finishing ability during an appearance on Rio Ferdinand’s YouTube channel.

“Ethan, I tell you, he’s a killer in front of the goal. He’s a killer. Incredible!” Jesus revealed. “We play a D-zone game, like the coach has the ball and they play to one player on the edge of the box. And my guy, Ethan, is the best I have seen. Out of 10, nine goals. Even 10 sometimes. He’s a killer!”

The situation has raised broader concerns about Arsenal’s young talent, with Manchester United reportedly showing interest in Myles Lewis-Skelly after already securing Ayden Heaven and Chido Obi from the Gunners’ academy.

Nwaneri’s loan spell continues until the summer, with his development at Marseille now under scrutiny as Arsenal monitor his progress from afar.
