Chuks Aneke, who came through Arsenal's academy before spending more than a decade in the Football League, has announced his retirement from professional football at the age of 33.

The Newham born striker joined Arsenal's youth setup in 2010 but never made a first team appearance for the club. Instead he was sent out on loan to Stevenage, Preston North End and Crewe Alexandra before being released when his contract expired in 2014.

From there Aneke moved to Belgian side Zulte Waregem, returning to England two years later with MK Dons. He went on to represent Charlton Athletic across two separate spells, as well as Birmingham City, before signing for Shrewsbury Town last summer. He managed just one goal in 15 appearances for the League Two club.

Aneke's retirement statement

Announcing the news on social media, Aneke wrote: “I'd like to officially announce my retirement from professional football. Also like to express my gratitude to all the coaches all the staff, my teachers, my friends and my family and the fans, the ones who supported me and the ones who's didn't. It was all part of an amazing journey and I wouldn't change it. Looking forward to the second half. God bless.”

The message prompted tributes from several of his former clubs and teammates. Crewe Alexandra posted: “What a career, Chuks. All the best for everything you have planned,” while Shrewsbury Town wrote: “Congratulations on a fantastic career, Chuks. All the best for what's next!”

Former teammates also paid their respects, with Chuba Akpom calling him “an inspiration from early,” Sheyi Omotayo describing him as “one of the best to do it,” and Miles Leaburn adding: “What a guy man. Good luck in the next chapter.”

A new career in scouting

Aneke will remain involved in the game, having already moved into scouting and recruitment analysis with Shrewsbury Town. According to BBC Shropshire, he began the role in January this year, with manager Michael Appleton reportedly praising his eye for identifying promising talent.

Shrewsbury had confirmed that same month that Aneke had stepped away from playing duties by mutual consent, stating: “Chuks has made the decision to step away from his playing role with the club by mutual consent. We wish Chuks every success in his new endeavours.”

Aneke's career never quite delivered the breakthrough many expected when he progressed through Arsenal's youth ranks, but he carved out a lengthy journeyman career across English and Belgian football. He now begins a new chapter off the pitch, working to identify the next generation of talent.
