Arsenal have made their first approach for a highly-rated French wonderkid, as Mikel Arteta looks to strengthen his side ahead of an important campaign.

Arsenal have made initial contact with Stade Rennais regarding French centre-back Jérémy Jacquet, according to transfer guru, Fabrizio Romano. The 20-year-old defender has emerged as a potential target for the Gunners as they plan for possible defensive departures in the coming months.

Jacquet, who was born in Bondy, the same Parisian suburb that produced William Saliba, has caught Arsenal’s attention after establishing himself in Rennes’ first team this season. After joining Clermont Foot in January 2024, the defender returned to his parent club last winter and made an instant impression, making him a starter in Habib Beye’s side.

The youngster recently committed his long-term future to the Breton club by signing a new contract until June 2029, but if Arsenal do not land their target this summer, they still see him as an option next year.

Rennes’ academy has consistently been ranked among France’s finest, topping the official French Football Federation rankings for three consecutive seasons. The club has a remarkable track record of developing world-class talent, with former academy graduates including Ousmane Dembélé, Eduardo Camavinga, Yoann Gourcuff, and Abdoulaye Doucouré all progressing to achieve international recognition.

While the Gunners have already welcomed Valencia’s young Cristhian Mosquera, whose versatility allows him to adopt any position in the backline, Jakub Kiwior could potentially depart North London, amid European interest – and Arsenal have already declined one bid for his services.

Jacquet’s market value currently stands at approximately €10 million, though Stade Rennais’ recent contract extension demonstrates their determination to retain their promising defender.

On the pitch, all Arsenal players are set to report for training at Sobha Realty Training Centre tomorrow, ahead of their midweek Villarreal friendly.
