Viktor Gyokeres has scored in back-to-back internationals for Sweden, with the Arsenal striker finding the net against Poland after also scoring against Romania earlier in this window.

The timing is notable. Gyokeres has spent much of the season so far on the bench, with Kai Havertz preferred in the central role, but the German picked up an injury in Germany's first match of this international window, leaving question marks over his availability.

Back-to-back goals on international duty

Gyokeres' strike against Poland, as reported by Caught Offside, followed his goal against Romania, giving him two in two for his country during this break.

It is the sort of run that has defined his career before arriving in north London. Gyokeres built his reputation on a relentless goalscoring record, and Sweden have consistently played to those strengths — direct service, space to run into, and a clear focus on getting him into shooting positions.

His situation is also helped by circumstance. With Alexander Isak injured and back at Liverpool, Gyokeres is expected to continue starting Sweden's remaining fixtures in this window, which would give him further opportunities to add to his tally.

What it means for Arsenal

Gyokeres has not started regularly for the Gunners this season, but the club still regard him as a key part of the squad. Minutes have been limited rather than the ability being questioned, and two goals on international duty offer a reminder of what he can produce when the ball arrives in the right areas.

Should Havertz be unavailable when the squad reconvenes, the route back into the starting XI becomes considerably clearer. Mikel Arteta has leaned on Havertz's link play and positional discipline, but a striker returning to the training ground with goals in his legs and confidence restored is a different proposition to one who has been watching from the bench.

The other side of the coin is the risk that comes with every international break. Arsenal already have fitness concerns to manage, and the club will be hoping Gyokeres comes through Sweden's remaining matches without picking up a problem of his own.

For now, the Swede has used the break exactly as a player short on minutes would want to — by scoring. Attention will turn to whether that form carries over once club football resumes and how Havertz's fitness situation develops in the coming days.
