Inter Milan have identified Riccardo Calafiori as a target for next season, though the Italian giants acknowledge the significant challenges they would face in prising the defender away from Arsenal.

The 24-year-old has established himself as Arsenal’s first-choice left-back since arriving at the Emirates Stadium last season, becoming one of the most consistent performers in Mikel Arteta’s squad. His impressive displays have not gone unnoticed by his former homeland, with Inter viewing him as an ideal addition to their defensive ranks.

Calafiori’s rise at Arsenal

Since joining the Gunners, Calafiori initially faced competition from academy graduate Myles Lewis-Skelly for the left-back position. However, the Italian international has firmly established himself ahead of the young Englishman during the current campaign, becoming a regular starter and one of the team’s most reliable players.

The defender’s consistent performances have made him one of the first names on Arteta’s team sheet, with his ability to influence matches from a defensive position proving vital to Arsenal’s tactical setup. His contributions have reinforced the club’s long-term commitment to keeping him in north London.

Inter’s interest and obstacles

According to Sempre Inter, the Serie A side are already considering a move for Calafiori ahead of next season. Inter see the former Italy international as a perfect fit for their squad as they look to strengthen their defensive options.

However, the report emphasises that Inter are fully aware of the difficulties involved in completing such a transfer. Arsenal have made their position crystal clear – they are not willing to sell the defender during the upcoming summer window.

The Gunners’ determination to retain Calafiori stems from his importance to their project under Arteta. Given his status as one of their standout performers, allowing him to leave would contradict their ambitions of building on what has been a strong campaign.

Arsenal’s stance

Arsenal’s reluctance to entertain offers for Calafiori reflects their broader strategy of retaining key players who have proven their worth. The club recognise that losing one of their most consistent defenders would significantly weaken their squad depth and tactical flexibility.

While a return to Italy could appeal to Calafiori at some point in his career, Arsenal’s current focus remains on maintaining the core of their squad. The defender’s performances have justified the club’s faith in him, making him an integral part of their plans moving forward.

Inter Milan will need to look elsewhere for defensive reinforcements this summer, as Arsenal show no signs of wavering in their determination to keep hold of one of their most valuable assets.
