Juventus have abandoned their pursuit of Riccardo Calafiori after concluding the Arsenal defender is out of reach, and have switched their attention to a Liverpool centre-back instead.

According to La Gazzetta dello Sport, the Serie A giants are preparing a significant squad rebuild following a run of underwhelming league finishes, with a clear emphasis on rebuilding an Italian spine in the mould of the Leonardo Bonucci and Giorgio Chiellini era.

Calafiori was one of the names on that list, alongside Chelsea's Marco Palestra. The report states both players were ultimately deemed unattainable due to their profile and price tags, leaving Juventus to look elsewhere.

Juventus turn to Liverpool's Leoni

The Bianconeri have instead made Giovanni Leoni their priority. The Italian centre-back joined Liverpool from Parma last summer in a £26m deal, but has made just one first-team appearance after rupturing his ACL on his debut.

Leoni is reported to be closing in on a return, with suggestions he could feature for Liverpool after the international break. Despite the long layoff, the 19-year-old remains highly rated across Europe.

Gazzetta report that Juventus have already made multiple approaches to sign him on loan, and have not been discouraged by repeated rejections. Liverpool are said to be unwilling to sanction an exit just one year into a long-term contract, but Juventus will reportedly continue to send scouts to watch him every week.

Brentford's Michael Kayode is also said to be among their targets. The 22-year-old spent four years in Juventus' academy before moving into senior football with Gozzano and Fiorentina, and scored on his senior Italy debut last week.

What it means for Arsenal

For Arsenal, the practical takeaway is straightforward enough: there is no live negotiation to worry about. Juventus looked at Calafiori, assessed the cost and the player's standing at the club, and moved on without testing the water.

Calafiori arrived in north London from Bologna in the summer of 2024 and has become an increasingly important figure in Mikel Arteta's defensive rotation, capable of operating at left-back or in the middle of a back four. His ability to step into midfield from the left side has given Arteta a distinct structural option in build-up.

It is also worth noting the framing from Italy. Calafiori was not listed as an available option that Arsenal might consider selling, but as a player whose profile and price placed him beyond Juventus' reach entirely. That is a reflection of how the market now values a defender Arsenal signed barely two years ago.

The report originates from Gazzetta, one of Italy's most established sports publications, though as with all overseas transfer reporting it is worth treating the detail with a degree of caution until it is corroborated elsewhere.

With Juventus now focused on Leoni and Kayode, attention in north London remains on the pitch, where Calafiori will expect to continue featuring in Arteta's plans through a congested autumn schedule.
