Chelsea are in pole position to sign Katie McCabe after the Ireland captain’s departure from Arsenal was confirmed, according to a joint report from Arseblog and BBC Sport.

McCabe will leave Arsenal when her contract expires on June 30, with Chelsea now leading the race ahead of Manchester City and several NWSL clubs. The versatile defender has spent nearly a decade at the club since joining in summer 2015.

Arsenal’s change of heart came too late

Arsenal had originally decided against extending McCabe’s contract, but the club changed its mind after the 28-year-old delivered excellent performances at centre-back during Champions League matches against Chelsea and Lyon this season. However, the late contract offer meant her departure could not be announced during the final home game of the season.

According to Arseblog and BBC Sport, Manchester City had been hopeful of signing McCabe alongside Beth Mead, but their pursuit was never as advanced as their deal for Mead.

Previous interest from rivals

This would not be Chelsea’s first attempt to sign McCabe. The Blues made an approach in January 2023, which Arsenal firmly rejected. Lyon also showed interest in summer 2024, with Arsenal again rebuffing their offer.

McCabe’s time at Arsenal has been highly successful, winning a WSL title, Champions League, FA Cup, FIFA Champions Cup and four League Cups. Her versatility has been a key asset, with recent performances at centre-back demonstrating her adaptability across multiple positions.

The Ireland captain’s potential move to Stamford Bridge would see her remain in London, where she has established roots during her decade-long stay in north London. Her leadership qualities and experience would provide a significant boost to Chelsea’s squad as they continue to challenge for domestic and European honours.

McCabe’s departure represents another significant change for Arsenal’s squad, with the club undergoing a period of transition as established players move on and new talent arrives to shape the team’s future direction.
