Arsenal’s clash with Liverpool ended in a controversial 2-2 draw after a late disallowed goal left Gunners fans and players alike frustrated.

Former Premier League referee Mike Dean weighed in on the incident, describing the referee’s decision as a ‘50:50’ call that ultimately prevented Arsenal from clinching the win.

Arsenal Lead but Face Setbacks

Arsenal went into the match prepared for a fierce contest against their title-chasing rivals, with Bukayo Saka and Mikel Merino both scoring to give Arsenal a first-half lead.

Despite a strong start, Virgil van Dijk’s header narrowed the gap, setting up a nail-biting second half.

However, the Gunners found themselves further disadvantaged by injuries, as Gabriel Magalhães and Jurrien Timber joined William Saliba, who was suspended, and Martin Odegaard on the sidelines.

These injuries chipped away at Arsenal’s defence, giving Liverpool the chance to level the score.

As Liverpool pressed for a victory, the Gunners held firm, and by the 90th minute, Arsenal mounted a final attack, aiming to snatch back the lead.

Controversial Decision Stuns the Emirates

Just as Arsenal’s Gabriel Jesus slotted the ball into an open goal after Kai Havertz’s clever lob over Liverpool keeper Caoimhin Kelleher, referee Anthony Taylor blew his whistle.

The goal was ruled out, leaving the score deadlocked.

The decision was due to an earlier foul by Arsenal’s Jakub Kiwior on Dominik Szoboszlai, with Taylor judging that the Polish defender had climbed over the Liverpool player to win a header.

Because the foul was whistled before the ball hit the net, VAR could not intervene, a point that added to the frustration among Arsenal players and fans.

Dean’s Perspective on the ‘50:50’ Call

Mike Dean, a retired Premier League referee, defended Taylor’s decision on Sky Sports, calling it a “soft foul” but admitting that it was a difficult judgment.

“It’s probably a 50:50 call,” Dean remarked.

“He’s had a good game, the referee, so I can’t criticise him for that to be honest with you.”

Following the final whistle, Gabriel Jesus was booked for his protests, alongside several other Arsenal players who voiced their disappointment to Taylor and his assistants.

Despite the frustration, Dean suggested that the decision was balanced, with neither side benefiting unfairly.

For Arsenal, this draw might feel like a missed opportunity, yet they’ll look to regroup as they push forward in their title campaign.
