Liverpool Captain Acknowledges Arsenal Defender’s Talents

Van Dijk Praises Arsenal’s Saliba, Calling Him a Premier League Standout
Liverpool centre-back and captain Virgil van Dijk recently voiced high praise for Arsenal’s William Saliba, acknowledging the young Frenchman as one of the most impressive defenders in the Premier League.
Van Dijk, who himself has long been considered one of the league’s top centre-backs, reflected on his own career progression and conceded that Saliba, at 23, is already playing at a level he could only dream of at the same age.

In an appearance on the Rio Ferdinand Presents podcast, van Dijk singled out Saliba when asked about standout defenders.
“Obviously, Saliba’s making very good steps at the moment. He’s the first one I just have in mind now,” the Liverpool captain shared.
Van Dijk went on to acknowledge that he was “nowhere near” Saliba’s level at that stage in his career, citing the young Arsenal player’s skill in possession and overall game sense as key factors in his success.
Comparisons Drawn Between Two Standout Defenders
Van Dijk’s admiration for Saliba comes amid growing comparisons between the two players from fans and pundits alike.
Saliba’s calm, commanding presence on the pitch and physical stature are often seen as reminiscent of van Dijk, who has become a model for modern centre-backs with his leadership and skill both in defence and in ball control.
Despite this comparison, van Dijk made it clear that he continues to learn from watching younger players like Saliba.
“I think, especially in ball possession, the way you position yourself,” van Dijk explained, adding that he watches players at the highest level to pick up new skills.
Reflecting on his own role, van Dijk shared how he’s continued refining his positioning on the pitch, particularly playing as a right-footed centre-half on the left.
According to van Dijk, even with years of experience, there’s always room to learn from others, saying, “I feel like, at any age, you can keep learning, and I definitely still do that.”
A Career of Growth and Success for Van Dijk
Van Dijk’s journey to becoming a Premier League and Champions League winner with Liverpool was far from instantaneous.
At the age Saliba is now, van Dijk was plying his trade with Celtic in Scotland before making a move to Southampton in 2015, followed by a record-breaking £75 million transfer to Liverpool in 2018.
His career reached a pinnacle when he guided Liverpool to a Premier League title in 2020 and the Champions League trophy in 2019.
These achievements, combined with his near-win for the Ballon d’Or in 2019, cement his legacy as one of the greats of his generation.
Now 33 and nearing the latter stages of his career, van Dijk sees value in appreciating new talent, acknowledging Saliba’s achievements as part of the beauty of the game.
Saliba’s rapid rise has been remarkable, and the young centre-back has quickly become a core asset in Arsenal’s defence, earning him admiration across the league.
A Crucial Season for Liverpool and Arsenal’s Title Hopes
With Arsenal and Liverpool both vying for the Premier League title, the performance of these two influential defenders will be critical to their respective clubs’ ambitions.
Both van Dijk and Saliba will need to maintain top form as they prepare for challenging fixtures.
Liverpool are set to face Brighton this Saturday, while Saliba and Arsenal head to Newcastle for an early kick-off, with the results likely to impact the title race.
