Manchester United have opened discussions with Sandro Tonali’s representatives as they look to beat Arsenal to the Newcastle midfielder’s signature, according to Fabrizio Romano.

The Italian international has emerged as one of the Premier League’s standout performers this season and was previously linked with the Gunners during the January transfer window, though no deal materialised.

Romano revealed that United’s interest has now moved beyond speculation, with the Old Trafford club making direct contact with Tonali’s camp to gauge the situation.

United lead the race

Speaking to Football365, Romano explained the current state of play surrounding the 26-year-old midfielder.

“It is important to note that Manchester United have already made contact with Tonali’s camp to be informed about his situation. There is still no agreement, no negotiation stage yet, but the interest is real and consistent,” Romano said.

“Tonali appreciates the idea of returning to a bigger European stage if all parties align, so this one will be worth keeping an eye on.”

The transfer expert confirmed that Arsenal’s interest remains genuine but noted that neither club has advanced to serious negotiations yet.

“There is also interest from Arsenal, confirmed, but again nothing advanced there either. For Italian clubs, including Juventus, the deal would be financially almost impossible,” Romano added.

Newcastle’s European hopes key

Newcastle’s potential failure to secure European qualification could prove decisive in Tonali’s future. The Magpies are currently battling for a top-seven finish, but missing out on continental competition would likely increase the midfielder’s desire to move.

Arsenal face a challenging summer as they look to strengthen their midfield options. The club’s ability to offer Champions League football could prove crucial in any potential pursuit of Tonali, particularly given his stated preference for returning to a bigger European stage.

United’s early move to establish contact demonstrates their serious intent, potentially giving them an advantage in what promises to be a competitive race for the Italian’s signature.

The coming months will be crucial as both clubs weigh up their summer transfer strategies, with Tonali’s situation set to develop further once Newcastle’s European ambitions become clearer.
