Max Dowman sent off on England duty in behind-closed-doors defeat of USA

Max Dowman was shown a straight red card for England's Under-19s on Friday, cutting short his afternoon in a behind-closed-doors fixture against the United States in Spain.
The Arsenal teenager, who turned in a direct hand in the opening goal, was dismissed in the 74th minute at the Marbella Football Centre as Ben Futcher's side held on for a 2-1 win despite playing the closing stages with ten men.

The exact reason for the dismissal has not been confirmed. According to the Daily Mail, sources described the incident as "a little kick out when a player went past him" and felt the decision was on the harsh side.
A bright start before the red card
Dowman had been involved from the very first minute, setting up former Manchester City forward Reigan Heskey to put England in front inside 60 seconds. Tottenham's Luca Williams-Barnett added the second before the USA pulled one back.
England close out their international break on Monday against Belgium. It is not yet clear whether Dowman will be available or involved in that squad.
The 16-year-old has already compressed a remarkable amount into a short career. He sat his GCSEs in the summer and owns a Premier League winners' medal after Arsenal's title success last season. This term he has made two appearances for the Gunners, scoring twice, and has been named among the substitutes on several other occasions.
Carsley urges patience over the U21 step up
Dowman has not yet played above Under-19 level for England, despite a growing section of supporters pushing for him to be fast-tracked. Under-21 boss Lee Carsley addressed that debate last week, making clear the pathway will be managed carefully.
"It's important that players develop at their own pace," Carsley said. "Max is an outstanding talent, the timing and the balance of when he comes to the U21s is inevitable."
He added: "He's going to the U21s because of his talent, but we have to make sure we do that at the right time. We have to be patient and make sure that ultimately we want them to play for the senior team for a prolonged period."
Carsley also drew a direct comparison with another Hale End product who was pushed through quickly. "We had a similar issue a few years ago with Ethan Nwaneri. He was early and he made his debut and he's done really well and there's that tendency to push him on quickly."
For Arsenal, the episode is a reminder of the balancing act around a player who is still only 16 but is already operating in Premier League squads. Friday's red card came in a closed-doors game with no television coverage and no wider competitive consequence, and the Gunners will be focused on how he is reintegrated once the international window closes.
Attention now turns to Monday's meeting with Belgium and whether Dowman features before he reports back to London Colney.
