Jose Mourinho has once again turned his attention to Arsenal, this time taking aim at Mikel Arteta's new contract and the patience afforded to him in north London.

The Portuguese manager, now in charge at Real Madrid, referenced Arteta's recent contract renewal during a press conference, using it to draw a pointed comparison with the expectations he faces at the Bernabeu.

Mourinho's history with Arsenal dates back to his first arrival in the Premier League in the summer of 2004, when his Chelsea side won the title and challenged Arsene Wenger's dominance following Arsenal's unbeaten Invincibles campaign. The two became fierce London rivals, with their touchline battles and verbal sparring regularly making headlines over the following years. Chelsea eventually sacked Mourinho before bringing him back for a second spell, during which his rivalry with Arsenal continued, though he has not managed in the Premier League for several years since.

What Mourinho said

As quoted by Yahoo Sports, Mourinho said: 'Yesterday, I read something curious that shouldn't happen at Madrid. Mikel Arteta renewed his contract at Arsenal. He's been there four or five years and said they're still just starting and that there's a lot to do.'

He continued: 'What might be normal for others isn't here. Madrid has won so much that everything has a different magnitude.'

The comments reflect the pressure Mourinho is currently under at Madrid, where he was appointed with the task of overtaking Barcelona, a job that has proven difficult so far. His remarks drew a clear contrast between the patience shown to Arteta in north London and the win now demands he faces at the Bernabeu.

Arteta's project under scrutiny

Arteta has been in charge at the Emirates for four to five years, during which Arsenal have steadily climbed back into contention for major honours both domestically and in Europe. His new contract reflects the club's continued backing of his long term project, even as supporters and pundits debate how much longer patience alone should be expected to deliver silverware.

Mourinho's intervention is unlikely to change that calculus at Arsenal, but it does highlight how differently managerial timelines are viewed across Europe's biggest clubs. While Arteta continues to build in north London with the security of a fresh deal, Mourinho's own situation at Madrid remains far less settled as he tries to close the gap on Barcelona.

Arsenal's focus will remain on their own progress under Arteta rather than outside commentary, with the club's performances this season continuing to keep them in the conversation among Europe's leading sides.
