Nico Williams had his pick of Europe’s biggest clubs after starring for Spain at Euro 2024, and Arsenal were among those who tried to sign him. According to his agent, Felix Tainta, the winger turned down all of them, including Arsenal, Barcelona, Bayern Munich, Liverpool and Paris Saint-Germain, to stay at Athletic Bilbao.

Speaking to Goal, Tainta detailed just how many clubs came calling for his client in the summer of 2024. “We all know about Barca’s interest in the summer of ’24, after the European Championship,” he said. “Barcelona, Arsenal, Bayern (Munich), Liverpool, Paris Saint-Germain… I could name them all. Everyone wanted Nico, and having a player say no to all these clubs isn’t easy.”

Barcelona were the frontrunners

Despite Arsenal’s efforts to bring Williams to the Emirates Stadium, Barcelona were always his preferred destination. The idea of linking up with international teammate Lamine Yamal, with whom he had just won the European Championship, made a move to the Camp Nou especially attractive.

Tainta explained that talks progressed directly with Barcelona once their interest became serious. “From there, we talked to Barca. Athletic knew because I kept them informed about the situation at all times, even though Athletic were angry with Barca for their methods. From then on, I initiated conversations.”

Ultimately, Barcelona were unable to guarantee that Williams would be registered to play, given the club’s well documented financial restrictions at the time. With his move to Barcelona left in limbo and no desire to join a different club instead, Williams opted to stay put. He went on to sign a ten year contract extension with Athletic Bilbao, ending any hope Arsenal had of landing him that summer.

Arsenal’s long term interest

The episode underlines how highly rated the 24 year old winger is across the continent, and it appears Arsenal have not given up hope of one day securing his signature. Williams remains on the club’s radar, with the north London side continuing to monitor his situation.

Williams has continued to be a key player for Athletic Bilbao and Spain since turning down his suitors, and any renewed interest from Arsenal would likely have to contend with the same obstacles as before, namely his loyalty to Athletic and the lure of a move to a club like Barcelona should circumstances change.

For now, Arsenal’s pursuit of Williams remains a case of patience rather than progress, with the winger committed to Bilbao for the long term future.
