Pep Guardiola’s expected departure from Manchester City this summer could create the perfect conditions for Arsenal to establish a period of sustained dominance in English football.

According to Football London, strong rumours suggest this could be Guardiola’s final season at the Etihad, with reports circulating since last year when Enzo Maresca left Chelsea following suggestions of contact with City.

The timing could hardly be better for Arsenal, who are currently favourites to pip Guardiola to the Premier League title and potentially secure a domestic treble. Should the Gunners win their final two games, there would be nothing the Spanish manager could do to respond.

Champions League final adds to momentum

Arsenal’s path to sustained success has been further boosted by their qualification for the UEFA Champions League final, marking just the second time in the club’s history they have reached this stage. The achievement matches Guardiola’s tally during his City tenure, where he lost to Chelsea in 2021 before beating Inter Milan in 2023.

Despite Guardiola’s previous dismissals of exit speculation, telling reporters in December: “I have a contract, I said this a thousand million times. I know you are bored of me! I will leave one day, I promise you. But I have a contract,” reports continue to suggest this summer will mark his departure barring a considerable U-turn.

City’s rebuilding challenge

The potential managerial change represents only part of City’s summer upheaval. The club is also set to lose key players including Bernardo Silva and John Stones, removing significant experience and influence from their squad.

Neither of the rumoured replacements for Guardiola – Maresca or Vincent Kompany – can match the Spaniard’s experience and proven managerial quality at the highest level. This creates an opportunity gap that Arsenal appear well-positioned to exploit.

The challenge for Mikel Arteta has been securing that first title and allowing his players to experience such achievement. There is growing belief that breaking through could spark a dynasty of dominance for the north London side, particularly with a Champions League final offering the potential to reach entirely new heights in the club’s 140-year history.

Guardiola’s departure would also eliminate City’s significant advantage in attracting transfer targets, while Arsenal’s stability under Arteta provides new players with clear answers about the club’s direction. In contrast, City would face numerous hypotheticals about their future approach under new leadership.

With Arsenal maintaining their upward trajectory while City faces major changes across both management and playing staff, the conditions appear set for a significant shift in the Premier League’s power balance.
