Pundit tips Arsenal teen with 'world at his feet' for Old Firm loan

Max Dowman could be on the move in the second half of the season, with both Rangers and Celtic floated as possible destinations for the Arsenal teenager as he continues to search for regular minutes in north London.

The attacker has been tipped to spend time away from the Emirates this year, and Scotland has emerged as one route being discussed publicly. Jack Wilshere had previously suggested Luton Town as a landing spot, but the Old Firm option would place Dowman in a very different environment — one with European football, packed stadiums and weekly scrutiny.

Hutton: 'He's got the world at his feet'

Former Rangers defender Alan Hutton is among those who believe a switch to Ibrox would serve the youngster well.

"Max Dowman is a top, top talent. I mean, he's got the world at his feet," Hutton said, speaking to Glasgow World. "The thing for him is doing the best for his development moving forward, and he needs to pick the right club that suits his profile of player. So would he do well at Rangers? Yeah, of course."

Hutton's point is less about the badge and more about the fit — the level of trust a club would place in an 16-year-old-turned-teenage prospect, and whether the minutes would actually arrive.

The Nwaneri template

Arsenal already have a live example of the model working. Ethan Nwaneri is benefiting from his loan spell at Borussia Dortmund, and the club could reasonably conclude that a similar pathway would accelerate Dowman's progress.

The two are different players, and the destinations under discussion are very different leagues. But the principle is the same: guaranteed football at a club under pressure to win, rather than scattered substitute appearances behind an established Premier League attack.

Dowman would reportedly welcome such an opportunity, and Arsenal are said to be open to the idea. The caveat, as ever with the club's brightest academy products, is that any temporary exit will only be sanctioned if the staff are satisfied the tactical environment, the playing time and the standard of opposition all line up.

That is the crux of it. A loan for the sake of a loan does nothing for a player of Dowman's profile, and Arsenal have been deliberate in how they have managed his exposure to senior football so far.

What happens next

Rangers and Celtic would both offer regular European nights and a title race, alongside the kind of expectation that tests a young attacker's temperament. Whether either can promise the consistent starting role Arsenal would demand is the question the club will be weighing up.

For now, this remains at the speculation stage rather than anything approaching an agreement. The decision is likely to crystallise as the January window approaches, with Arsenal holding the final say on where — and whether — Dowman spends the rest of the campaign.
