Real Madrid eye surprise move for Arsenal midfielder after Spain brace

Mikel Merino's match-winning heroics for Spain appear to have caught the eye of Real Madrid, who are reportedly weighing up a move for the Arsenal midfielder ahead of future transfer windows.
According to Spanish outlet Fichajes, Madrid see Merino as a possible option to strengthen their midfield, though the report stresses there is currently no confirmed offer or negotiation between the two clubs. Interestingly, Madrid are said to have considered Merino before his 2024 switch from Real Sociedad to Arsenal, but opted for a different profile at the time.

Spain heroics reignite interest
The renewed attention comes after Merino's decisive impact off the bench for Spain against Croatia, where he scored twice to turn a 1-0 deficit into a 2-1 victory. It is the latest example of a trend that has followed him at international level, where he has built a reputation as a super-sub capable of changing games in the closing stages.
That knack for arriving in dangerous areas has clearly not gone unnoticed, with Madrid reportedly viewing him as a potential alternative in midfield.
A tougher task for minutes at Arsenal
At club level, the picture looks rather different. Merino, 30, has found regular starts hard to come by amid intense competition for places in Mikel Arteta's midfield, which includes Declan Rice, Martin Ødegaard, Bruno Guimarães, Myles Lewis-Skelly, Eberechi Eze and Martín Zubimendi.
He featured only sparingly in Arsenal's dramatic comeback win over Leeds United on Saturday, a match in which Guimarães came off the bench to score the winner. The competition for midfield minutes at the Emirates Stadium shows no sign of easing, with Arsenal juggling commitments across multiple competitions this season.
Despite the limited game time, there is little indication Arsenal would be willing to part with a player who offers the versatility Merino provides. He can operate centrally or in a more advanced role when needed, adding height, physicality and an unpredictable goal threat that few other squad options bring.
With a long campaign still ahead and Arsenal competing on several fronts, maintaining squad depth in midfield remains a priority for Arteta. Any decision on Merino's long-term future at the club is likely to hinge as much on game-time management as it is on any interest from Madrid.
For now, Merino remains an Arsenal player, and the suggestion of Real Madrid's interest is, at this stage, speculation rather than a concrete transfer approach. How Arteta chooses to rotate his midfield options over the coming months may prove just as significant as any transfer talk emerging from Spain.
