Tuchel urges England fans to stop booing Arsenal's Ben White

Thomas Tuchel has called on England supporters to end their treatment of Ben White, insisting the saga surrounding the Arsenal defender's World Cup walkout should now be a 'closed book'.
White was booed on his return to international football last March, with sections of the England crowd still unwilling to forgive him for leaving the Qatar World Cup camp early in 2022 following a disagreement with Gareth Southgate's assistant, Steve Holland. He went four years without a cap before Tuchel brought him back into the fold.

Now named in Tuchel's squad for the first time since featuring against Japan and Uruguay earlier this year, White could face a Wembley crowd again when England take on Croatia next Thursday. Speaking ahead of the squad announcement, Tuchel made clear where he stands on the booing.
'It should be a closed book'
Tuchel did not hold back when addressing the issue directly, as quoted by the Daily Mail.
“We were not happy about it [the booing],” Tuchel said. “We understand the disappointment of the fans but it's been expressed now and it should be a closed book. Everybody can see the investment of Ben and the quality of Ben in terms of how he presented himself when he was with us.”
He also reflected on how difficult the entire situation has been for the Arsenal man, referencing both his impact on the pitch and the awkward moments that followed. White scored England's goal in a 1-1 draw with Uruguay in March but also gave away the penalty from which the South Americans equalised.
“It was very eventful for him and not so easy,” Tuchel said. “But when I spoke to him I could see the hunger. He deserves to be able to open a new chapter and he deserves positive feedback from the crowd.”
Four years in the international wilderness
White's last previous cap before this year's recall came in March 2022, the final squad named under Southgate before the Qatar World Cup that autumn. He departed the tournament early after the disagreement with Holland and was never selected again during Southgate's remaining time in charge.
At Arsenal, White has continued to be a regular fixture under Mikel Arteta, operating across the back line and in midfield when required. His versatility has made him a valuable option for the Gunners even as the international snub lingered in the background for years.
Whether Wembley's crowd heeds Tuchel's message remains to be seen when White potentially takes the pitch against Croatia. For now, the England manager has made his position on the matter unambiguous, and the hope at Arsenal will be that the defender can continue to focus on his club form regardless of how he's received on international duty.
