Arsenal 'make contact' over Haaland as £500k-a-week snag emerges

Arsenal have reportedly approached Erling Haaland's representatives over a potential move for the Manchester City striker, with the north London side said to be monitoring the uncertainty surrounding the Etihad squad.

The claim, reported by Football Insider, follows reports that Manchester City have been found guilty of alleged financial breaches brought against them by the Premier League. Real Madrid are said to have made contact with Haaland's camp as well.

The suggestion is that Arsenal are looking to take advantage of the uncertainty likely to surround several members of City's squad in the aftermath of that verdict.

The wage obstacle

Football.london report that a move remains highly unlikely regardless of any exploratory contact. Haaland's reported wages of £500,000-a-week would almost certainly price Arsenal out of any deal, with the Norwegian's salary sitting far beyond the club's existing structure.

Arsenal's interest in adding a new forward is well established. The Gunners were linked with Real Madrid's Vinicius Jr. and Atletico Madrid's Julian Alvarez over the summer, but neither player left their club before the window shut.

Instead, Arsenal completed four signings in the summer window, bringing in Ezri Konsa, Christos Tzolis, Bruno Guimaraes and Illan Meslier. A forward addition was explored late on but never materialised.

Brentford's Kevin Schade also on the radar

A more realistic name has also surfaced. Sky Sports report that Arsenal are one of two Premier League clubs to have expressed an interest in Brentford forward Kevin Schade, with Liverpool also in the picture.

The Germany international has made a strong start to the season for the Bees, and the report states that Arsenal and Liverpool have been the most "keen" to explore a deal for the versatile attacker.

Chelsea and Tottenham are also said to be monitoring the situation. Brentford, for their part, have reportedly already looked at offering Schade fresh terms in response to the growing attention.

Schade's profile is a notably different one to Haaland's. Able to operate across the front line rather than purely as a central striker, the 24-year-old would represent a far more attainable target in financial terms, and one that fits the type of recruitment Arsenal have leaned on in recent windows.

What happens next

With the January window still a few months from opening, these are early-stage links rather than advanced negotiations. The Haaland story is tied entirely to the fallout from the reported verdict against Manchester City, and how that situation develops will dictate whether any of the speculation around their squad gains substance.
