Arsenal Agree Terms with Riccardo Calafiori
The Gunners have agreed to a five-year contract with Riccardo Calafiori, a highly-regarded young defender from Bologna.
This move signifies Arsenal’s intent to strengthen their defense, which was already the best in the Premier League in terms of goals conceded last season.
Adding Calafiori to the defensive lineup alongside Gabriel Magalhaes and William Saliba could provide Arsenal with one of Europe’s most formidable backlines.
Fabrizio Romano reported that while the contract terms with Calafiori have been settled, the deal is not finalized.
Bologna and Arsenal are still negotiating the transfer fee, with Bologna seeking around €50m (£42m).
A complication in the deal is that Calafiori’s former club, FC Basel, is entitled to 50% of any transfer fee above €4.5m (£3.8m).
Calafiori: A Rising Star in European Football
At just 22 years old, Riccardo Calafiori has already made a significant impact in European football.
His performances in the Euro 2024 tournament have drawn widespread acclaim, including praise from former England manager Fabio Capello, who was impressed by Calafiori’s composure and personality on the big stage.
Capello remarked, “I didn’t think someone making his debut could show this much personality. No fear.”
In addition to Arsenal, other Premier League clubs, including Tottenham Hotspur, have shown interest in the young defender.
Securing Calafiori not only strengthens Arsenal’s squad but also represents a strategic move to outmaneuver their rivals.
