In a fiercely contested north London derby, Arsenal secured a narrow 1-0 victory over Tottenham Hotspur, marking their ninth Premier League away win of 2024.

However, the match will be remembered not just for the result, but for equalling a Premier League record for the most yellow cards shown in the first half of a match.

The tension-filled encounter saw seven bookings in just 45 minutes, as both sides fought for dominance at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Arsenal Squanders Early Chances Against Tottenham

Arsenal dominated the early stages, creating several goal-scoring opportunities, but failed to break the deadlock.

Gabriel Martinelli missed a crucial chance to put the Gunners ahead, only to be denied by Spurs goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario, who was in excellent form throughout the match.

Despite Arsenal’s pressure, the score remained goalless at half-time.

Tottenham also had their share of chances, with Brennan Johnson firing over the bar, and Spurs maintained comfortable control of possession.

Yet, they too could not find the back of the net in the first 45 minutes.

Tempers Flare as Cards Fly

The first half of the match was marred by heated confrontations, reaching a boiling point just before the break.

A foul by Arsenal’s Jurrien Timber on Spurs’ Pedro Porro sparked controversy.

Timber, while shielding the ball, lifted his boot and made contact with Porro’s ankle.

Referee Jarred Gillett immediately handed Timber a yellow card, and Spurs goalkeeper Vicario also received a booking for grabbing Timber’s shirt in the ensuing confrontation.

The incident nearly resulted in a full-blown altercation, with players from both sides crowding together to defuse the situation.

By the end of the first half, a total of seven yellow cards had been issued, tying a Premier League record for the most cautions in the opening half of a match.

Five Spurs players, including Destiny Udogie, Rodrigo Bentancur, Micky van de Ven, and Dejan Kulusevski, found themselves in the referee’s book.

Arsenal’s William Saliba joined Timber in receiving a yellow for delaying the restart.

Gabriel’s Decisive Goal

Neither Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou nor Arsenal’s Mikel Arteta opted to make substitutions at half-time.

The second half saw Arsenal midfielder Jorginho booked just four minutes after the restart, becoming the eighth player to receive a yellow card.

Despite the high level of tension, Arsenal finally found a breakthrough in the 68th minute.

Centre-back Gabriel Magalhaes leapt highest to meet a corner, powering a header past Vicario to give the Gunners a 1-0 lead.

The goal proved decisive, as Arsenal held on to secure the win and climb into second place in the Premier League table.

Arteta’s men have now won nine of their last 10 away matches in the league, and with this latest victory, they remain firmly in contention at the top of the table.
