He explained that when he joined Arsenal, the squad was filled with players over the age of 26 or 27, earning high salaries but not performing up to par.
Edu noted that this situation required tough decisions to improve the team’s future prospects.
Edu stated, “In football, you sometimes have to make decisions that are simple and others that are not popular.
You have to be firm in your beliefs about what is best for the club and its future.
When I joined, I analyzed the squad’s balance, looking at positions, ages, and performance levels. Players over 26 or 27 on high salaries who weren’t performing needed attention.”
Making Unpopular Decisions
Edu acknowledged that many players in such situations had strong fan and media support, making it challenging to move them on.
However, he stressed that keeping underperforming players on high wages was not sustainable for the club.
Edu said, “You become uncomfortable when a player over 28, on a big salary, is not performing. It’s better to move them on, as they might be blocking younger, promising players. When I arrived, most of the squad fit this description.”
He continued, “Unpopular decisions had to be made because the club’s health was at stake. The first step was to clean the squad and establish a new foundation with younger players on lower salaries, who are hungry for success and can drive us forward.”
Building a New Foundation
Edu’s approach has focused on creating a balanced squad with a mix of youth and experience, ensuring that players are motivated and performing.
This strategy has been instrumental in Arsenal’s recent achievements. By prioritizing younger players with potential and a desire to succeed, Arsenal has set a course for sustained success.
Edu concluded, “We needed to build a new foundation with young players, on lower salaries, who have bright futures and the hunger to take us where we want to go. These decisions were crucial for the club’s transformation.”
